For nearly two decades, Monette Marino, a dedicated and passionate drum teacher/performer in San Diego, has shared her love for percussion with students and audiences worldwide.
Her drumming journey began at age 8 on the drum set, later expanding to hand drumming at 15. Over 30 years, she has studied Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Caribbean, Korean, and West African drumming with master teachers, cultivating a deep respect for the cultural heritage preserved through rhythm.
In 1995, Monette launched her career as a professional musician and percussion teacher, founding Baraka International Arts, which evolved into Tam Tam Mandingue USA, a branch of Mamady Keita’s international percussion school. After intensive studies with Keita, she became a certified teacher and earned the prestigious TTM Diploma of Proficiency, a rare honor recognizing mastery of Mandingue percussion and culture. As Vice President of Tam Tam Mandingue International (2003–2012), she standardized teacher certification and organized global conferences to preserve Mandingue traditions.
A seasoned performer, Monette has collaborated with artists like Mamady Keita and his group Sewa Kan, appeared on shows like American Idol, and formed her own band in 2011, releasing her debut album Coup d’Éclat. In 2014, she founded MO’RHYTHM School of Percussion, expanding her curriculum to include diverse drumming styles, ensuring her legacy of rhythm and cultural appreciation continues to inspire future generations.
